Regulating Work Camps In Oklahoma

Given our interest in criminal justice reform in Oklahoma, we have been following the stories published by the Center for Investigative Journalism and found Oklahoma lawmakers are taking affirmative steps to prevent regulation of the alternative sentencing programs in this state. Many of these programs send defendants into dangerous jobs without pay and without the ability to claim worker's compensation if they are injured. 

Former State Representative Doug Cox passed an amendment that exempted these organizations from state oversight: 

Today, because of Cox’s intervention, CAAIR and many other recovery programs in Oklahoma remain uncertified and exempt from oversight. The state Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services is not required to regulate the programs or inspect them. It has no power to shut them down.
